Pitches, courts and outdoor sports facilities

The Council has a number of pitches and courts available for hire for different sports.

Playing fields

Pleasington playing fields

  • Open all year round.
  • It has 12 full size football pitches, six of which are of sand construction and drain excellently (the others being of a soil based construction).
  • Changing rooms and car parking are excellent and can accommodate almost any size of competition.
  • The home of Blackburn Combination who play on Saturday afternoons, Blackburn Sunday League who play on a Sunday morning and the East Lancashire Alliance League who play on Saturday mornings.
  • The schools town team boys and girls also play at this facility on Saturday mornings.
  • Spectators are always welcome and it is a good opportunity to see the best amateur talent in the area.
  • This is the home of the Blackburn with Darwen annual pre-season national football festival.
  • Pleasington also has 10 cricket wickets - midweek and weekend cricket leagues play throughout the summer months.

Pleasington playing fields are situated on Tower Road, Blackburn.

Blacksnape playing fields

  • The facilities at Blacksnape have been upgraded due to an investment in facilities from the Football Foundation, the Council and Darwen Academy.
  • The stone built changing rooms are designed to the latest FA specifications and have been constructed to deliver facilities for girl's football and disabled facilities – this is to maximize usage of the facilities.
  • The playing fields overlook the town and Darwen Tower.
  • The pitches are currently being used by the Blackburn Combination on a Saturday, Blackburn Sunday League and the East Lancashire Alliance League on Sundays.
  • Facilities are also used by the Bolton leagues.
  • There are six full size and three quarter size pitches for hire. There is also two 9v9 pitches.
  • Four synthetic cricket wickets are available.
  • Changing facilities are available to accommodate all teams.

Blacksnape playing fields are located on Blacksnape Road, Darwen.

Pleckgate playing fields

  • Pleckgate playing fields are a major outdoor facility in the town. Based within the boundaries of Pleckgate School.
  • There are two full size sand/grass pitches.
  • Changing facilities and car parking are close by.
  • This venue caters for bookings from several leagues - it is played on in the morning and afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays during the football season.

Pleckgate playing fields are situated on Pleckgate Road, Blackburn.

Pleckgate hockey pitch

  • Sports England's Community Club awarded the club £431,000 to fund the pitches. This was supplemented by money raised by the club.
  • The Council and Pleckgate High School have agreed a partnership with the club and use of land at the back of the school.
  • The pitch is used by the school during the day and community bookings are taken evenings and weekends for football and hockey, with priority given to Blackburn Northern and hockey bookings.
  • Hockey development activities are organised and supported by England Hockey.
  • Pitch opening times in May, June, July and August: Monday – Friday from 10am - 8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 12noon - 8pm.*
  • There are 3 synthetic courts, 6 shale courts and 1 multi sports area.
  • Tennis courts are free – there is need to book so you can just turn up.
  • This facility will not be staffed.

*Please note: The pitch opens on weekends only from 12pm until the evening in September.

Athletics track

  • The track is based at Witton Country Park.
  • It has 6 lanes with all the associated disciplines, and is floodlit.
  • The track is home to Blackburn Harriers, but caters for many club events over a year and hosts sports days for local schools.
  • Available to casual or group users, 7 days a week.
  • Car parking facilities are available, as well as disabled access.

3G astroturfs

  • Based at Witton Park Arena
  • There are two full size 3G astroturf pitches with floodlights and changing rooms.
  • The turf can accommodate the following football: 11v11 matches, 9 v 9, 7 v 7 and also 5 v 5.
  • Price reductions are available if 10 bookings are paid for in advance.

Mini soccer

Cross country course

  • Based at Witton Country Park.
  • It is a nationally famous cross-country course.
  • The course holds several events throughout the year for various groups, such as Lancashire police and schools.

Show field

  • Based at Witton Country Park.
  • It is the main venue for all the large events in the town including the bonfire, show jumping and the annual fair at Easter.
  • The show field an accommodate events for approximately 20,000 people.
  • There are car parking facilities available.
  • Catering facilities are available throughout the summer months at the 'Pavilion in the Park'.
