Library newsletter coronavirus update

Due to the ongoing situation with the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 in the UK, all Blackburn with Darwen Libraries will be temporarily closed until further notice. Regular events and activities have been postponed or suspended (see below). All necessary precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers and customers. All outstanding loans have been automatically renewed until 4th May. A telephone service is still available from Blackburn Library (01254) 661221, or you can email if in doubt. You can also check our Facebook or Twitter pages for the latest information, or check the council's website

Although Blackburn Library and Darwen Library remain open, due to the disruption to services we’ve unfortunately had to cancel, postpone or suspend most of the activities, meetings and events which were due to take place in the next few days and weeks. This includes ‘one off’ events such as the visit by Leslie Cavendish (The Beatles’ hairdresser) on 3rd April and the Blackburn Children’s Reading Festival, and regular weekly events such as Tuesday Reading Group and the story and rhyme times. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and will get regular events up and running again as soon as it’s safe to do so. We hope to reschedule as many of the ‘one off’ events as possible for later in the year.

Some independent groups who meet in the library have also told us that they will be suspending operations for the time being. If you think you might be affected, please contact the organiser of your group in the first instance, if they haven’t already been in touch with you.

Temporary borrowing increases

Blackburn with Darwen Libraries have made some temporary changes to make it easier for people to carry on using our services and keep reading if they are quarantined:

  • We will be increasing the maximum book loan limit from 15 to 30
  • We will be increasing the unseen renewal limit to 16 renewals (4 months, in line with the Government quarantine self-isolation period for over 70s).

All of these changes will come into immediate effect.

Online library services

Don't forget you have access to thousands of free eBooks and eAudiobooks with the BorrowBox app and your Blackburn with Darwen library card! All you need to do is download the app on your smartphone or tablet for 24/7 access.

You also have 24/7 access to a great selection of the UK's most popular magazines with your Blackburn with Darwen library card. Enjoy magazines such as Vogue, Empire, New Scientist, Cosmopolitan, Top Gear, National Geographic and many more by downloading the RB Digital app.

We are currently looking into ways in which we can keep more of our services available online if further closures become necessary. Further updates will follow in due course.
