Funeral and burial emergency on call service

The emergency funeral service is available on weekends and Bank Holidays for deaths that have occurred in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen and/or for burials taking place in Blackburn with Darwen.

Cremations can only be dealt with during the registrar's normal office hours - Monday to Friday from 9am until 4:30pm.

The emergency service allows deaths to be buried out of hours. The service is primarily used for faith deaths that require a body to be buried as soon as possible after death - although the service can be used by any faith or non/faith.

This is available:

  • Saturday - 10am until 4pm
  • Sunday and Bank Holiday - 10am until 2pm
  • Sunday before a Bank Holiday - 10am until 4pm.

Arranging a burial in Blackburn with Darwen for deaths occurring within Blackburn with Darwen

Muslims must first contact the Blackburn with Darwen Muslim Burial Society who will act on the deceased’s family’s behalf.

Once in possession of a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from a qualified Medical Practitioner:

Muslims should ask the Blackburn with Darwen Muslim Burial Society to contact the duty registrar by calling 01254 588660 - this automated service will advise how to make contact with the duty registrar.

Please note that before issuing the certificate for burial the Registrar has by law to make certain that the death does not need to be referred to H.M Coroner for consideration and decision.

For Muslim burials, if the Registrar is able to issue the certificate for burial, arrangements will be made for a member of the Muslim Burial Society along with a qualified informant to meet with the Registrar to issue the certificate for burial. An appointment to register the death will be made by the Registrar at this meeting - this appointment must take place within 5 days of the date of death

When the certificate for burial is issued and if the burial is to take place in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, the Registrar will contact the cemeteries duty officer who will advise when a funeral can take place.

The certificate for burial issued by the Registrar will then need to be taken to the cemeteries duty officer before the funeral can take place.

Arranging a burial in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen for deaths occurred elsewhere.

You will need to contact the registration authority in whose district the death occurred to obtain a certificate for burial.

Once you have possession of the certificate Muslims should ask a member of the Blackburn with Darwen Muslim Burial Society to ring 01254 588660 - this automated service will advise how to make contact with the duty registrar.

The duty registrar will pass your contact details to the cemeteries’ officer on duty.

The duty cemeteries’ officer will contact you to make the necessary funeral arrangements

The certificate for burial issued by the Registrar will then need to be taken to the cemeteries duty officer before the funeral can take place.
