Births: who can register one

If the parents of the child were married to each other at the time of the birth, either the mother or the father may register.

If the parents of the child were not married to each other at the time of the child’s birth, the father’s details may only be entered in the register if the mother and father go to the register office and sign the birth register together. If this is not possible please contact us as there are some circumstances were it is possible to record the father’s particulars without the parents attending a register office together.

If English is not the parent’s first language and they need assistance registering the birth it would be helpful to ask someone to accompany them to the register office to act as an interpreter. Please remember the parent(s) must register the birth personally; they cannot ask a friend or relative to register instead of them.
