Birth registration

Every birth in England or Wales must be registered in the registration district in which it occurred, within 42 days (6 weeks) of the date of birth.

If this is not possible or convenient then details may be given to any registration officer of births in England or Wales, who will forward the details to the correct registration district.

You can register a birth that took place within the borough of Blackburn with Darwen at Blackburn Register office or Darwen Register office

All registrations are by appointment only. Please contact us for an appointment.

You can also make appointments at some of our children's centres for birth registrations only.

Appointments are available 2pm to 4pm alternate Wednesdays:

Full and short birth certificates can be purchased at the time of registration or at any time afterwards.

Please note due to legislative changes, we no longer issue free short birth certificates.
