Service information

The European passport return service is for EEA, Swiss nationals and their family members to keep their passport while their online application is being processed.

The European passport return service is provided by local authorities or nominated premium service centres.  The service is only for those making their application online at gov.uk for either of the following:

EEA (QP) : Application for a registration certificate as a European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss national who is in the UK as a qualified person.

or

EEA (PR) : Application for a document certifying permanent residence or permanent residence card under the EEA Regulations.

You can use this service if you are an EEA or Swiss national and you have applied online for a registration certificate or a document certifying permanent residence. You can also include any family members (of any nationality) who you have included in your online application.

The European passport return service can only be used to verify and copy your and your family’s passports, to submit with your applications. National identity cards and other supporting evidence must be submitted as originals only.

You and any family members you have included in your online application (over the age of 15 years and 6 months) should attend this appointment in person together.

You will need to attend an appointment with them within 10 working days of submitting your online application, so you may want to book an appointment before you submit your application.

What you need to bring with you

When you attend your appointment you will need to bring:

  • your original passports
  • a copy of your checklist and supporting documents
  • a printed copy of your application form
  • the postage fee

At your appointment we will verify and take a copy of your passport along with the passports of any family members you have included in your online application before forwarding along with your document checklist, application form and supporting documents to the Home Office on your behalf. The cost of postage is payable to the registration officer at the time of your interview.

Important

Using the European passport return service does not guarantee the success of your application and we cannot provide any advice on your application.

The service will not check that your form has been correctly completed and or that the correct supporting documents have been submitted.

To use this service you must:

  • Hold a current EEA / Swiss passport
  • Have completed an online application to the Home Office for a Permanent Residence Card / Registration Card.
  • Be applying as an individual or a family
  • Be able to attend an appointment within ten working days of making your online application.
